Why Botox? What You Need To Know For Your First Time Getting Botox

Ok, let’s talk botox. I love that cosmetic procedures like botox and plastic surgery are becoming more and more openly talked about these days. It makes them much more approachable and way less scary! I’ll be completely honest in saying I was always a little scared of botox. Like what in the world is it?! Will it mess up my face?! Do I need it? Where do I need it? Why do I need it or want it? Well my friends at Southeastern Dermatology were so welcoming for my first appointment and were GREAT at explaining what was happening.

My Botox Experience

I knew I didn’t want much. I still want my forehead to move, I just wanted to tighten up, up there and prevent those forehead wrinkles from forming permanent lines. My use of Botox did just that! I got my 11’s done which is the little section between your brows that form lines that looks like an 11. Just being able to not form those lines does wonders for your RBF. (ha!) But for real, the fact that I can no longer make those 11’s means that I’m not making those little lines, permanent lines. Then we just spritzed some botox through my forehead. We didn’t do a lot, just a few units across my entire forehead to tame those muscles so it will minimize those lines. I was starting to get some lines on my forehead, that even when my forehead was at rest you could kind of see them. So now, those are totally gone.

That’s my experience and what I chose to do for my first time. And I have loved the results! But let’s get a little more technical.

What Is Botox?

Dr. Doppelt explained it the best way I’ve heard before he injected me. He said something along the lines of, botox just weakens the muscles so you’re not able to exercise them as much. So, say you injected your eyebrow, you wouldn’t be able to raise your eyebrows because botox has weakened that muscle. That’s all you’re doing to your forehead when you inject it. You’re just weakening the muscles that are creating those forehead wrinkles so that you can’t make those wrinkles anymore. Once he explained it that way, botox seems a LOT less intimidating right?!

It’s a common misconception that Botox “freezes” the face and prevents natural facial expressions. Let’s take a look at what causes wrinkles and how.

How Do Wrinkles Form?

Some wrinkles are caused by the repeated contraction of muscles. When you pull your eyebrows together in a frown, wrinkle your forehead in concentration, or squint your eyes underlying muscles pull skin into lines and wrinkles. When those actions are repeated over and over, wrinkles settle into skin.

How Does Botox Work?

Botox is a neuromodulator. Injected into precise points on the face, it interrupts signals from nerves that tell muscles to contract. Properly administered, it simply allows muscles to relax into a smoother foundation for skin. It’s the anti-wrinkle injection!

What is a Botox Treatment Like?

At Southeastern Dermatology Dr. Doppelt administers Botox® injections personally, applying years of training and experience to safely achieve individualized results.

After an initial consultation to determine if Botox is right for you, Dr. Doppelt explains treatment and discusses possible side effects and cost. Then the product is injected into facial muscles with a very fine needle for minimal discomfort. It is well tolerated, but topical numbing cream can be used if your skin is especially sensitive.

Because each rejuvenation plan is customized, duration of Botox treatment varies, but typically an injection session takes an hour or less. There is essentially no downtime – you may return to work or other activities right away and wear makeup if you’d like. You begin to see change within two days, and improvement continues for up to a month. Most patients are so happy with results that they scheduled touch-up sessions about every three to four months.
