How To Stay Motivated To Be Healthy Through The Holidays

How To Stay Healthy Through The Holidays

Alright ya’ll. I’m all about the holidays but I will say one of the hardest parts of the holidays is staying healthy. It’s SO HARD! I’ve literally always been the person who at this time of the year throws all that hard work from the year out the window and indulges. It’s just too easy. The weather encourages staying in and definitely not getting out of bed in the cold morning temps! Brrrr. And there is yummy food everywhere you turn! Dinners out with friends, holiday events, desserts everywhere, it’s just too much yummy stuff to pass up!

I’m not going to promise I’m going to be 100% on my A-game, but I will promise I’m going to try. That’s all we can do, right?! My November is always SO crazy and it’s already been a struggle to stay on track but I’ve been rounding up some of my best healthy habit tips. These will hopefully help us make it through the holidays feeling good and not gaining back that 10 lbs in a month and a half!

How to Stay Healthy Through the Holidays

  1. Plan ahead: You usually know your big events for the week. Thanksgiving, Friendsgiving, date night, holiday parties, etc. So plan around those. If you have 3 big night out meals, plan to really keep all your other meals healthy and balanced. I use the excuse, “oh I’m eating out three nights this week, I don’t need groceries this week” excuse allll the time! It’s terrible! So then you end up wasting money eating out and eating not your best for a whole week! Don’t do it! Just plan out those other dinner meals and make sure to get your lunches and snacks so that those three night out meals are the only times you’re really splurging for the week.
  2. Pack your lunches and have plenty of snacks: When I know I’m eating a heavy dinner or have a fun night coming up I really try to stay super healthy leading up to it. Pack a lunch and stay on track as much as you can. Also, have plenty of snacks on hand that you can reach for when you do get hungry. Sometimes you reach for those donuts at the office when you’re hungry, not when you actually want it. I’m a firm believer in not wasting calories on something unless it sounds absolutely delish.
  3. Throw out the “I’ve already screwed it up” mentality: Ok, I know we’ve all done it, so no shame. But we’ve got to stop it! One bad meal doesn’t screw anything up when you get back on track for your next meal. So a few meals that aren’t your healthiest are ok! Just try to get back on the healthy train asap afterwards. Otherwise you’re headed down a slippery slope.
  4. Have one cookie, not 5: I know it’s hard. And I’m all about treating yo self, but let’s indulge, not overindulge.
  5. Workout in the mornings: The holiday season is so busy and things come up all. the. time. in the months of November and December. Aka, there are about 10x more reasons to not workout. And I’ll be the first to admit when I get busy my workouts are the first to go. I’ve been majorly struggling lately and I HATE working out in the mornings, but sometimes you’ve gotta suck it up and do it.
  6. Find an accountability partner: Whether it’s a workout partner or a my fitness pal friend or just someone who’s trying to make it through the holidays without gaining 10 lbs. Find someone on the same page as you. I have a hard time with peer pressure. If my friends are eating 5 cookies, I wanna eat 5 cookies too! But when I have a friend passing after one cookie it’s easier to say no too. Just having someone you can check in with is motivation to do a little better!

Not a “must” for the list but a significant added bonus. Find a cute festive sweatshirt to help with those morning workouts and an adorable gold lunch bag to motivate you to pack a healthy lunch! Sometimes the little things work wonders!
